Join our Tulip Watercolour & Embroidery Workshop

Enjoy a day of art and inspiration in the beautiful grounds of Cromlix this Spring. Discover the beauty of tulips, as Edinburgh Artists Jenny Matthews RSW and Lucy Freeman join us to teach a floral watercolour painting and embroidery workshop.

You’ll spend the morning painting tulips grown in the Cromlix garden under the guidance of Jenny, followed by a delicious two course lunch in the Glasshouse Restaurant before learning contemporary floral embroidery with Lucy.

For the rest of the afternoon, you’ll be free to explore both arts with Jenny and Lucy on hand to offer individual tutoring. Nature, beauty and tranquility are assured during this immersive day of creativity. 

Using artist-quality watercolours and paper, Jenny will teach some of the effects which make watercolour unique with demonstrations of flower painting throughout the day. You will have plenty of opportunity to explore the medium and to create your own painting whilst working from the Cromlix tulips. Paint, paper and the use of a variety of brushes are provided. Jenny’s paintings will be displayed to inspire you.

In the afternoon, learn how to use four simple stitches to create a painterly embroidered tulip, full of colour and delicate details. Lucy's contemporary techniques are quick, simple and expressive, encouraging you to paint with thread in a looser style than seen traditionally. All the materials are included: fabric, threads, templates, an embroidery hoop and needle, as well as instructional sheets and access to video tutorials so you can continue to learn more after the workshop. Plus, you can take everything home with you to continue sewing at home. Lucy’s embroidery artwork will be on display throughout the workshop for inspiration, as well as a variety of drawings and templates.

A little about your tutors for the workshop ~ 

Jenny Matthews RSW is a watercolour artist specialising in flowers and plants. Her method of painting embraces the unpredictable qualities of the medium and is full of movement and colour. As well as teaching classes and workshops, she also exhibits her work in galleries across the UK. Jenny is a council member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, has won two prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society and has been shortlisted for the Fabriano International Watercolour Prize in Italy.

Lucy Freeman is a textile Artist and Designer. Merging the traditional craft of embroidery and contemporary design, her work is full of vibrant colours, painterly stitching and delicate botanical and floral imagery. She is an experienced tutor and has also created a beautiful range of embroidery kits which have been sold in Liberty and John Lewis.
